As we transition to Common Core standards across California, the
Next Generation Science Standards are being rolled out as well,
with a implementation date of 2016. Check out these links
with important information and the standards our 5th-8th graders
are studying!
This season, we begin by diving into the world of decomposers, an
imperative piece of all food chains as we study fungi,
bacteria and most important, invertebrates: WORMS!
We will get to compare real red wigglers to tasty gummi
worms as we learn how to write a formal lab report. We also
get to set up our worm compost bin and predict how the FBI will
grow!
To start this season, our foray into “Earth’s Place in the
Universe” has us delving into patterns of the Sun, Moon and stars
as well as understanding orbits, seasons and the use of models in
our Solar System study. We get to learn how to play “Moon
Rummy”, study Moon craters, model eliptical orbits and MUCH
more!
This autumn seasons has our Life Scientists delving into the
world of classification, understanding the cell as the basis of
life, doing our first dissection, studying the roles and
locations of various organelles in the cells of living organisms,
and MUCH more!
These autumn month have us venturing into the world of
Motion and Forces! For example, we are studying Newton’s
Law’s of Motion, different types of forces, how to calculate
acceleration and forces and using our new found knowledge to
design and build in a few awesome Engineering Design Challenges!
It’s going to be a “moving” experience for everyone!
